Strange. I have:

$ set | egrep -i 'utf|xterm'
LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
TERM=xterm
XTERM_LOCALE=en_US.UTF-8
XTERM_SHELL=/bin/ksh
XTERM_VERSION='XTerm/OpenBSD(327)'

and even with just this:

$ xrdb -query
xterm*precompose: false

and TrueType enabled, then accents are not displayed and copy-paste does
not work: I get an 'e' character followed by another character which is a
question mark inside a circle.
