i didnt realise it at the time, but the reason for ingos resistance is
that what i was suggesting was (unbeknownst to me) the old behaviour of
man (originating with 44BSD) that ingo had changed!
i really wish he had told me, so i could have just gone and installed
the old version, or switched to netbsd, which still uses it.
anyway! now i know!
