So, first of all, they are not the Jan 24 and Jan 31 snapshot.
It's a Jan 4 GENERIC (works) and a Jan 24 snapshot (no console).
Sorry for the confusion.

Also, boot device sd0, but root on sd1a
- but that is the case in both ...
