Your carp interfaces have IP address *assigned* to them.
When you ping carp ip from *backup*- it doesn't need to do ARP.It already knows this IP address is assigned to it's *own* carp interfaceTherefore it will ping itself, not master (I think icmp packets will go to localhost)
