Aha, I'll give that a try. I thought that DEBUG was a "boolean" so I
just set it as "make DEBUG=1" and when that failed I looked at the man
page and found DEBUG_PACKAGES.

I'll try with DEBUG=-g as well, but as you say, it will be some time
before it finishes.
