The SMP code was originally developed as a separate branch for some time
before being merged.

That's largely irrelevant, anyway - the MP kernel will, (or at least should),
actually run quite happily on single processor machines.
If you have a single core machine that boots bsd.sp, but not bsd.mp, that
might be interesting.
