raw USB speeds are faster but not fast on OpenBSD.

msdosfs has also known performance issues.

The speed of USB devices my vary a *lot* as well.
So to resume the situation you have at least 3 different subsystems
where performance could be improved on top of pieces of hardware of
different quality.
Everything can be improved, it's a matter of dedication ;) But make
sure you don't compare oranges to apples.
