OK. The dcraw code is copied around a lot, it maybe worth checking others -
besides ufraw there are:
graphics/dcraw
graphics/freeimage
graphics/rawstudio
graphics/libraw
graphics/rawtherapee
(if they don't fail then maybe they're built with -funsigned-char)
