Does /usr/lib/crt0.o exist? If it doesn't did tar complete successfully?
Maybe try:

# tar -C / -xzphf comp70.tgz || echo "somethings broken"

You may have run out of disk space or something similar and just didn't
notice. Thats my best guess.
