I've just tried it with amd64 snapshot packages built on August 5th (at
least that was when quirks-6.12 was signed), and observer:start(). opens
the observer.

I suspected at first that your error might be due to erlang-wx not being
installed, but that gives me

1> observer:start().
** exception error: undefined function observer:start/0

which is entirely what I would expect.

Can you confirm that you get this error with the actual package?
