I did actually consider this. I had tried (after deleting the copy):

rsync -avzS

No change - still 188 GB. So I've just tried (again after deleting the
copy):

rsync -avS

... in case using compression somehow negated the sparse files setting.
Again no change - still 188 GB.

Mysterious.
