chuckle, hopefully my explanation was useful. I've been doing this network thing since 10Mb thickwire Ethernet with all the fun of piranha taps, AUI connectors and properly terminated segments.

Long distance WAN was done over 56Kbaud synchronous serial links, that was if you worked for an organization that could afford a dedicated 56Kbaud link. Our facility had to make due with a 19.2Kbaud synchronous serial link over ~2000 miles, think middle of New Mexico USA to middle of Ohio USA.
