The workers were excavating a suspected pipeline leak in an area where a previous repair had taken place. The risks arising from the excavation work and exposure were significant. HSE's investigation found that the company had failed to properly identify and control the risks associated with carrying out a pipeline repair. Read this press release for more details on the incident. Other recent prosecution cases include: Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) can be caused by using hand-held power tools for prolonged periods of time. It is a painful, disabling disease of the hands affecting blood vessels, nerves and joints. Visit our HAVS website to find out what you should do to prevent this painful disease. Despite being banned in 1999, figures show that 5,000 people a year still die from asbestos-related diseases in the UK. We know that asbestos remains in millions of homes and buildings today. HSE's Asbestos & You campaign is urging tradespeople to protect themselves from exposure to lethal asbestos fibres during their work. Those carrying out repairs or refurbishment work are at a higher risk of disturbing asbestos, especially when working in houses built before the year 2000. To support the campaign the online construction community 'On The Tools' has created the video Silent Killer: The Tragic Story of Asbestos Victims to raise awareness of the dangers tradespeople face in their day-to-day work. Visit our Asbestos & You campaign website for more information about what to watch for and what to do when you come across it. You can: Come and work for HSE and help to protect lives and livelihoods. We currently have a range of vacancies.
