Some devices don't like having their MAC address changed; trunk does
this automatically so that the failover device uses the same MAC as the
primary device.

I can't say for sure that this is the problem, but it's possible.

Try setting the mue interface's MAC to that of the bwfm interface before adding it to the trunk (lladdr <mac> in hostname.mue0).
