This definitely works in general. So give us some more info about what
you actually did and what you actually saw, maybe we can help you.
But do note: the booting is managed by the system firmware until the
OS loads, then the OS takes over HW support. So it is POSSIBLE (though
unusual) to have incompatible hardware boot an install media just fine
then fail to see a disk.
But your answer to the disk/http/nfs question will be "disk".
The disk will be the USB drive's 'a' partition, and it is not
currently mounted.
