Is the fsck failed partition recoverable, or should I assume
the sd1 disk is at end of (a long) life?

Both disks probably need to be replaced. According to Dell's web site
the M6600 takes 2.5" SATA drives just like the M6700 (what I have).

Something like a WD Blue SA510 SATA SSD should work fine.
