It is probably a fault in the source disk but I get planty of these screens doing a ctrl+c during a stalled gtar:

when usb disks exited the operation (I see the light of the usb became normal) before the gtar command finish.
The gtar command:
gtar -c -M -L 10G -H pax -f mydata.tar "/mnt/HD/My Data"
