For what it's worth, as far as my problem of "debian VM can't connect to network: arp error?" goes, it hasn't reoccurred since I rebooted back then. Not sure what or why, but if it does, I'll try the earlier advice about using a vmm that has been rebuilt from the latest code (in the thread of an archive link someone provided earlier in this thread).
