It's unlikely that /home being full would do this.

/ possible but less likely.

Based on symptoms, /usr being full is much more likely. Also until
quite recently the auto partition defaults for /usr were really on the
low side so it's a common thing to run into. (With newer ones they're
on the high side instead...)

I recommend always checking for free space in /usr before upgrading,
it's hard to be accurate in predicting whether the new release will fit
but you can get a feel for whether it's likely to.
